Social Media Etiquette

By: Christopher Robison

This past week being Spring break left us with no class and little to write about. However our class this week was full of work and presentations to keep us busy. After completing our papers on Social Media Etiquette, a five minute presentation needed to be given to finish off the project. On top of that we had to come up with questions for each presenter.

My paper was on Simon Chylinski, a young man who posted multiple offensive things related to different topics on twitter. One of his offensive tweets was about Islamic immigrants in Sweden and how "People aren't blank slates that can be reprogrammed simply by being in a new country." he says that importing 3rd world people means 3rd world crime rates and IQ. This had the most backlash out of all the offensive tweets. Another of his tweets made light of transgender issues via an old meme mocking gender fluency. He said, in reply to a poll on youtube about which gender you identify with, "Helicopter, the attack kind". As you would imagine, this didn't sit well with the transgender community and those that support it. His final offensive tweet I found was actually a comment on one of his own tweets about the gender pay gap. He went on talking about how the pay gap isn't as steep as everyone makes it out to be, and even though there still isn't equal pay today, its ok because statistically more men die on the job.

This past week we had to read chapter 7 of lol...OMG which was all about active reputation management. According to the book, you need only follow 7 essential steps to recovering your online reputation.
  • Step 1: Google Yourself - Turn off custom search and delve into your past mistakes.
  • Step 2: Clean Up Your Accounts And Content - Start with Facebook, remove any harmful posts and likes then move to other accounts.
  • Step 3: Update Your Privacy Settings - Keep any information that needs to be hidden or isn't worth sharing, under wraps for only your eyes to see.
  • Step 4: Ask For Content To Be Removed - If content is posted by someone else, kindly ask that this content is removed.
  • Step 5: Update And Strengthen Your Passwords - A strong password contains a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, along with at least one symbol.
  • Step 6: Set Up A Google Alert For Your Name - This is a free tool offered by Google that emails you when any new results are found for your name or term that you gave.
  • Step 7: Claim Your Name - Register your name as a username on all of the most popular sites that allow profiles or user-generated content to prevent fraudulent accounts.
