Website Creation
By: Christopher Robison
This weeks class was all about website creation and its benefits in the job market. Creating these websites gives you a way to express yourself and give information to potential employers. You can make your website the way you want it with different widgets and tools to help your users navigate. You can also use these tools to organize your website, making it easier to read, follow, and find.
The first website we talked about was the Weebly website builder. This site is unique because it has an online store feature for personal business. This allows your websites guests to purchase any product featured on your page with advanced features such as real time shipping, abandoned carts, coupons and currencies. This eCommerce feature is available along with google ads for only $8 a month when payed annually. Overall, I would say that Weebly is my favorite of all the websites creators because of its versatility and ease of use.
I recently read an article about how to create a website with Weebly, by Richard Byrne. Byrne explains how he has been keeping up with Weebly and enjoys the fact that Weebly is growing in the teaching community. He says that he recommends it to teachers everywhere and that its a great way to build a free website with your students. Byrne mentions a website called Weebly for Education that "includes all of the intuitive website-building and blogging tools found on Weebly plus features built specifically for education." This website gives teachers a database of all student websites to be managed and moderated.

The next website we learned of was the Wix website builder. I found this website especially helpful because of its Wix Code feature. I am a computer science major so the use of JavaScript code in making a website gives you endless possibilities to what you can accomplish. This features gives you the opportunity to set up databases, create dynamic pages, repeating layouts, build custom forms and take full control of your site with JavaScript and APIs. With this feature, I would say Wix comes in a very close second to Weebly, simply because Wix requires a little bit more knowledge with technology and I like that Weebly is so easy that virtually anyone could use it.
Another article I recently read was on Wix, that gave a brief but descriptive introduction on the features and how to use it. The article talks about how Wix is so easy to use, you can make a website in a matter of minutes without even using html code like old website builders. Wix provides a wide range of features to work with. For instance, you can choose the template and background you want from their gallery and you can customize it the way you want. Wix also has an enhanced mobile version for website viewing or editing on the go.

The final website we talked about was one of the older website builders called WordPress. This website may be older, but it still has a multitude of features and some really outstanding designs and formats. Wordpress allows you to easily import your content from another service such as Medium, Blogger, LiveJournal, Movable Type, Tumblr, Typepad, and more. You can also easily import your content from a self-hosted WordPress site. With a premium account priced at only $8 a month when payed annually, you can easily become your own boss and start making money on your new website.
The last article I read by T. Alhat was on how website design has improved over the years. Like I said before with Wix, you no longer need to code your website with html, making websites a lot easier to create and maneuver. Another improvement listed is the website loading time. No longer do sites take minutes to fully load, but if a website takes longer than three seconds to fully load, 40% of users will abandon the site entirely. Not to long ago, website viewing wasn't available on the average mobile device either, making this another huge improvement. The website designing industry has come a long way with only more innovations to come.
This weeks reading was chapters 10 and 11 of Lol...OMG which was all about digital citizenship and and the future of online reputations. What I got from these chapters is that you are shaping the future of the internet and have the capability to leave a positive impact that will last as long as the internet itself. The internet got off to a rough start and was given a bad name by false identifying pedophiles and trollers. This is a prime example of how you can leave a negative impact on the internet and is exactly what any good internet user shouldn't do. Chapter 11, the last chapter in the book says that the aim of the book was to get students, or anyone for that matter, to be more conscious creators of content. This decreases the likelihood of a potential employer or college to find anything negative on you in the future. This book was a very informative and easy to read, giving me some tips that even I didn't know and I considered myself to be a conscious creator of content already.
